Peruvian-born artist Alvaro Perez del Solar’s “Piñata” is a colorful depiction of the dark side of human experience. He has a characteristically surreal sense of humor thus creating delightfully disturbing worlds. Through childlike imagery of dismemberment and often playful representations of sexuality, his pictures express the existential absurdity of the human condition through both drama and humor. His style is unique, strikingly free and surprisingly witty, while his unforgettably vivid symbolism challenges us through its quasi-pornographic metaphors.
Often wry, frequently terrifying, always remarkable, he uses vibrant colors and images of childhood and adolescence to express and put into context the pessimism that reflects the anxieties of our time, a time of great social and political upheaval. But above all, Mr. Pérez del Solar’s work possesses an irrepressible sense of fun that leaves us with the impression that in his world, there is laughter to be found in even the most unlikely of situations.
